Pentecost Sunday – 24 May 2026

Breathing New Life

In the Gospel for Pentecost Sunday, we find the disciples huddled behind locked doors, paralyzed by fear and uncertainty following the crucifixion. Suddenly, the risen Christ stands among them, piercing their anxiety with a profound greeting: “Peace be with you.” He shows them His wounds – the undeniable marks of His sacrifice – and then commissions them to continue His work in the world.

Central to this commissioning is an intimate, transformative act: Jesus breathes on them. This echoes the very dawn of creation, when God breathed life into the first human. Here, Christ is breathing new spiritual life into His emerging Church. As we reflect deeply on this moment, we must understand that the words ‘Receive a Holy Spirit’ express both a fact and a command: by breathing on them, Jesus is giving them the Holy Spirit, but they must accept this gift actively. The Spirit is freely and graciously poured out, yet it requires our willing, conscious cooperation to bear fruit in our daily lives.

Jesus immediately links this outpouring of the Spirit to a specific, vital mission: “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them.” The reference to the forgiveness of sins evokes and suggests that the disciples are to be the community in which the new covenant, climaxing in the forgiveness of sins, is to be realised and actualised. God’s law is no longer merely written on stone tablets, but inscribed upon the transformed human heart.

What does this mean for our parish today? It reminds us that our church is not just a gathering place, but a living, breathing community entrusted with a profound ministry of reconciliation. We are called to actively open our hearts to the Holy Spirit, unlocking our own doors of fear, judgment, or resentment. Empowered by that Spirit, we are challenged to become living vessels of God’s mercy, extending the radical forgiveness of the new covenant to a world desperately in need of healing.
