Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time – 14 June 2026

In this week’s Gospel, we are offered a profound glimpse into the heart of Jesus. Looking out over the crowds, He is moved with deep, visceral compassion because the people are “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Jesus does not remain a distant observer to human suffering. Instead, His immediate response is to empower His disciples to become laborers in a plentiful harvest, sending them out to heal, comfort, and proclaim that the Kingdom of Heaven has come near.

This calling was not just for the original Twelve; it is a direct blueprint for our own daily discipleship. Jesus reminds them, “Freely you have received; freely give.” Yet, before we can freely give to others, we must first recognize what we have received. Our ability to bind the wounds of a fractured world is entirely dependent on our willingness to draw close to the Good Shepherd and allow ourselves to be loved and sustained by Him.

“At this point, let us ask a few questions: we, who believe in God who is close, I wonder: do we confide in him? Do we know how to look forward trustfully, like a child who knows he is held in his father’s arms? Do we know how to sit in the Father’s lap with prayer, by listening to the Word, partaking of the Sacraments? And finally, close to him, do we know how to instil courage in others, to make ourselves close to those who suffer and are alone, to those who are distant and even those who are hostile? This is the substance of faith. This is what counts.” Pope Francis

The call to be labourers in the harvest begins with profound intimacy. When we cultivate a trusting, childlike closeness with our Heavenly Father, we are naturally propelled outward. Let us pray this week for the grace to rest deeply in God’s presence, so that we may have the strength and courage to bring His restorative compassion to everyone we encounter.
