Fish n Bread

Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ – 22 June 2025

Luke’s Gospel recounts the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand, a powerful moment in Jesus’ ministry that reveals His compassion, divine authority, and the abundance of God’s providence. In this passage, Jesus welcomes the crowds, speaks to them about the kingdom of God, and heals those in need. As the day draws to a close, the disciples urge Jesus to send the people away to find food and lodging. Instead, Jesus tells them, “You give them something to eat.” With only five loaves and two fish, He blesses and breaks the food, and miraculously, all are fed — with twelve baskets of leftovers.

This miracle prefigures the Eucharist, and it is fittingly connected to the Church’s feast of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also known as Corpus Christi. The multiplication of the loaves is not only about physical nourishment but also about spiritual sustenance. In the Eucharist, Jesus continues to feed His followers—not with earthly bread, but with His very body and blood, given for the life of the world. The feeding of the multitude is a sign pointing forward to the Last Supper and the ongoing mystery of the Mass, where Christ becomes truly present under the appearance of bread and wine.

The command Jesus gives—”You give them something to eat”—can also be seen as a mission given to the Church. Through the Eucharist, the Church receives Christ and is then called to be Christ to the world, feeding others with His love, mercy, and truth. This feast reminds us of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and the unity it brings to the Body of Christ—the Church.

In reflecting on this passage in Luke’s Gospel, we are invited to trust in Jesus’ ability to provide, to come to Him with what little we have, and to be open to the miraculous work He can do in and through us. Ultimately, we are invited into a deeper reverence for the Eucharist and a greater awareness of our role in sharing Christ with a hungry world.
