Knowing the Shepherd

Readings: Acts 13:14, 43-52; Rev 79, 14b-17, John 10:27-30

Scripture: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)

Refection: Sheep and shepherds are quite plentiful throughout the Bible, and they were quite plentiful throughout the ancient Middle East. The shepherd image is used to describe God in the Psalms and the books of the prophets. It is little wonder that Jesus describes his role and identity using this image; most everyone would have connected to it in some practical or religious way.

When Jesus spent time in the desert, or in quiet place where he went for prayer, I picture him observing shepherds with their flocks, scattered across hillsides, searching for sustenance and protection from the extreme elements. He would have seen small groups of shepherds draw all of their sheep together at night to remain safe and secure until the morning light. Then, once again, the sheep would be separated, each flock going along with its own shepherd. Perhaps this is where Jesus pondered how the sheep knew which shepherd to follow.

Both the sheep and the shepherd had to learn to recognize one another. Was it that kind of mutual recognition that Jesus hoped he and his followers would have? In the midst of all the noise of society, Jesus is inviting us to listen for his voice, to distinguish his message from others.

We will follow Jesus, like sheep follow their shepherd, as we learn that his voice is true and loving, and his words contain the message of life.

Meditation: It. strikes me that Jesus is patient in guiding us to recognize and listen to his voice. But what about us? How do we cut through the noise around us so we are able to hear him? Will that require more than just desire? What spiritual disciplines might help us learn to listen for the voice of Jesus? How might immersion in Scripture and exposure to sound teaching help us become more discerning? Would it serve us well to consider how we spend our time and with whom?

Prayer: Good and gracious Shepherd, call to us until we know your voice, and create in us the desire to follow you.
